Marquardt recently completed his final diplomatic assignment as U.S. Consul General in Sydney, responsible for Queensland and New South Wales. This capped a 33-year career as an American diplomat, including assignments as U.S. Ambassador to Madagascar, Cameroon, and Equatorial Guinea all countries in which he helped found new American Chambers of Commerce. Additionally, he has worked extensively with AmChams in prior economic assignments to France, Germany, Thailand, and the Congo.
Marquardt stresses that Australia remains the largest location for US investment in the entire Asia/Pacific region, outpacing opportunities in other larger and faster growing countries. Indeed, when both investment and trade are considered, the United States remains Australia’s leading economic partner by a wide margin. In taking the reins at Amcham, Marquardt intends to spur further growth in these business links between the two countries.
“Marquardt’s knowledge of trade and investment will be vital to the work that AmCham already conducts in that area. We see the synergy between his appointment and our strategic mission providing great benefit to our members, and the Australian and US economies. We are pleased and excited to welcome Niels to AmCham and know that he will lead the Chamber into even greater success,” said Ian Thomas, President of Boeing Australia and current President of the AmCham-Australia Board.
