In response to the tremendous success of Segway tours in San Francisco, The Electric Tour Company (formerly San Francisco Electric Tours) now offers tours in neighboring Sausalito.
"Sausalito was the next logical location for these terrific excursions," explains company founder Brian Huber. "Our schedule in San Francisco is as full as we can handle, so it's time to expand to a new but equally breathtaking spot, and Sausalito definitely fits that description." Within months of offering the tours in San Francisco, the company had a waiting list, attesting to the tours' wild popularity.
The Segway -- an electric transport mechanism that is guided by the rider's natural motions for forward and backward maneuvering -- easily navigates most areas, including paved surfaces, trails and grass. The unique transport qualities of the Segway combined with the beauty of Sausalito make these tours as appealing to the city's visitors as they do to locals.
"Segways allow riders to experience Sausalito like no bus or walking tour can," says Huber. "They're fun, they're safe, and ideal for families with children over 12." The Electric Tour Company pioneered the tour in San Francisco, and is now the only company offering it there as well as in Sausalito.
As with the San Francisco tours, the Sausalito tours emphasize courtesy, respect for the rules of the road, and common sense. Drivers receive 35-45 minutes of training on how to operate the Segway safely. "Everybody's primary goal is to enjoy the scenery and have a great time riding the Segway," says Huber. "And that happens when riders are adequately trained. Who wants to think about driving when they go on a road trip?"
After the training, Segway riders explore the Sausalito waterfront for a full two and a half hours, covering as much as six to eight miles. The tour provides exposure to everything on a visitor's checklist. It begins at the waterfront near Caledonia, and stops by scenic locations such as Cass Marina, Dunphy Park, Galilee Harbor, Clipper Harbor, and the impressive Bay Model. Attractions include the many intriguing houseboat communities, remarkable hand-built wooden boats, and the fascinating history of the Marinship area. Numerous photo stops are included, as well as a visit to the Bay Model (when open).
The new training facility is located at 1001 Bridgeway (at Caledonia) in Sausalito. Segway tourists are as happy with the value they get for their money as they are with the tour experience. "We'll definitely be recommending Segway tours to our friends and family. It's a worthwhile and memorable experience that we hope to have again in the near future," writes one satisfied customer. Some riders even become converts, as evidence by one customer who said, "Thanks to your tour, I bought two Segways last night for my wife and I. They will add new dimension to our lives."
Tours depart daily. Year-round tours leave at 11:30 am and 2:30 pm. Additional departure times are added based on demand. All Segway tours depart from the 1001 Bridgeway location (one block from the ferry landing). Fees are $65.00 per person (includes helmet and training) and reservations are required. Riders must be 12 and up; guests under 18 must be accompanied by a parent or guardian. Tours are limited to eight riders with one guide. Riders must be over 100 pounds and less than 250 pounds. Other custom tours are available for corporate and private groups.
