A Redlands, California inventor has a water saving new way to do an old chore: washing dishes. Hermo Malaguit, Jr. has filed for a patent on a novel sink stopper with a specially designed, adjustable water bypass system. The new technology will help consumers conserve water, energy, and time doing the chore of dish washing. He is already successfully marketing his first production units through a limited number of channels.
“Time is more important than any global currency,” Malaguit announced when showing his invention. “Using my product to soak dishes is the key to saving the time you normally spend scrubbing and scrubbing away at dried on food while the faucet runs and runs, wasting water. Instead of letting dirty dishes and utensils dry, this product lets you fill, walk away, and soak. When you return, the entire day’s dishes, pots, and pans can be washed in about ten minutes instead of half an hour. The water conservation is significant. Add just a little more hot water and detergent, then go. My invention gets rid of the dirty water as fresh hot water is added, and avoids the need to put flow restrictors in the faucet.”
Malaguit has retained intellectual property licensing firm AmiCOUR IP Group to negotiate US and worldwide licensing rights to his intellectual property. “We see lots of ideas but only accept about one in thirty submissions,” stated Scott Bechtel, AmiCOUR’s chief executive officer. Bechtel explained that the employees tested production units to convince themselves the product really saves time and water. “Water conservation is critical for some regions of the world. In the US, annual savings will range from $50 to $500 depending on water rates and whether the buyer uses a dishwasher.”
Bechtel continued,“Of course, dishwashing isn’t fun, but this product will be fun to represent. I am using the sample unit Hermo gave me every day now. It is beautifully designed and well made; and, it definitely saves water. I’ve helped inventors achieve their dream of landing their new products in Wal-Mart, but perhaps Hermo’s invention will become our first TV infomercial product. We are showing it to a leader in the D2C or direct to consumer industry.”
AmiCOUR is encouraging Malaguit to develop a version for commercial kitchen and food preparation businesses. Malaguit stated,“We are already prototyping these larger units. Soon the owner of a sandwich shop will be able to change from a three sink system to a more cost effective two sink wash area, opening floor space and reducing the labor costs of daily cleanup. The same is going to be true for every commercial food or beverage preparation facility, whether it’s a concession stand, school cafeteria, restaurant, bar, or bakery.”
“We plan to invite name brand manufacturers to consider buying licensing rights to Hermo's trademark Sink Magic® and his patent pending technology,” explained Tony Escobar, AmiCOUR’s executive vice president in charge of licensing operations. “The minute consumers discover the product, they love the idea, but distribution is still limited. More people need to learn about it. Full scale rapid commercialization might be better served by teaming with someone who can deliver a wide retail presence. As Scott mentioned, national television sales might be ideal for this product, but the outcome may depend on who decides to grab the first mover’s advantage. With a trademark and coming patent rights, we can deliver exclusivity to support either winning strategy.”
