In an effort to support Mayor Michael Hancock’s vision for development along the South Platte River Corridor, Unico Properties LLC (Unico) and U.S. Green Building Council Colorado (USGBC Colorado) are partnering to clean up debris along the river near Confluence Park in downtown Denver on Friday, October 4th from 1:00-5:00pm.
In Mayor Hancock’s “Vision for Building a World-Class City,” he highlighted the South Platte River Corridor as one of Denver’s three greatest urban development opportunities. According to the Smart Jobs Development report, one of Denver’s greatest natural resources is the South Platte River, which stretches for 12 miles through the city. To revive the river and enhance its natural amenities, Denver recently began a series of transformational projects that will create recreational and development opportunities, improve river access and better utilize the entire corridor including 24 miles of waterfront space through a mix of retail, residential, hotel, industrial and office real estate. With investment in remediation and shallower banks, the river corridor will come to life with open space and parks for fishing and swimming, as well as market-rate housing with views of the Rocky Mountains and Downtown.
“We are proud to partner with Unico on this service project to improve the health and beauty of our city.” stated Angie Fyfe, Executive Director of USGBC Colorado. “Our members enjoy giving back to the community through service projects. This project along the South Platte River in downtown Denver is an impactful way to improve the natural environment while aligning ourselves with the Mayor’s goals for the city.”
USGBC’s LEED for Neighborhood Development framework recognizes that the character of a neighborhood, including its streets, homes, workplaces, shops and public spaces, affects quality of life. Green developments respect historic resources and the existing community fabric.
Unico is a real estate investor and full-service operator, focused on office and multifamily assets in the western United States and is expanding their presence in the Denver area. “The Denver Market is an important one for Unico and we are excited to continue our investment momentum in Denver,” says Jonas Sylvester, CIO of Unico Properties LLC. “Multiple market indicators demonstrate that Denver continues to be a key location in which to invest, and we continue to actively look for more investment opportunities in Denver and beyond. We have a strong vision for growth in this market, and we are committed to expansion and long-term presence here.”
Unico is a strong advocate for improving their local markets through community service. The company provides up to 12 hours paid time off per year for employees to volunteer during work hours, and employees can use this time to volunteer for a recognized charitable organization of choice. Unico supports and encourages employees to assume leadership roles in community, industry and business organizations as well.
“Unico believes that healthy communities and healthy business environments go hand-in-hand, and that our values and our brand are reinforced when we reinvest directly in our communities”, says Jonas Sylvester. “Unico encourages its employees to be active and responsible citizens, investing time and resources to improve the quality of life in the communities in which we do business, ensuring that they remain strong, vibrant places for us all to live and work.”
USGBC Colorado (usgbccolorado.org) and its diverse group of green building industry professionals and community partners are improving Colorado’s social, economic, and environmental health through buildings and communities that are designed, built, and operated to be better places to live, learn, and work. Individuals and organizations contribute to our success through their membership, participation in community service events, and donating their time and expertise.
