County commissioners in New Mexico's Cibola and McKinley counties recently signed resolutions 'supporting and encouraging' uranium mining in their areas. The record uranium price, worries about global warming and the ongoing energy crisis have accelerated renewed interest in nuclear energy, both in New Mexico and worldwide.
Concerned about the welfare of its residents, McKinley County Commissioners hope to replace the loss of jobs the county will suffer, when the Pittsburgh & Midway coal mine shuts down in 2008. The county's resolution inviting uranium miners back into their county has brought about celebration by at least two uranium mining companies hoping to launch their in situ recovery (ISR) uranium projects in the near future.
Uranium Resources (OTC BB: URRE) vice president of environmental affairs Mark Pelizza told StockInterview.com, "We are pleased the principals of McKinley County understand the economic benefits of uranium mining. The potential impact is huge. At $100/pound and 10 million pounds of U3O8 produced annually, it could bring $1 billion in uranium sales to the local economy." Uranium Resources hopes to soon commence the company's Church Rock ISR project, outside of Gallup New Mexico. The U.S. Nuclear Regulatory Commission (NRC) recently re-affirmed a mid 1990s approval of the company's project.
Strathmore Minerals (TSX: STM) vice president of environmental affairs Juan Velasquez wrote in an email to StockInterview.com, "We have enjoyed the grass roots support from the folks in the Grants (New Mexico) area, and we are heartened that McKinley County is favorable to our activities." Strathmore opened a permitting office in 2005 to advance its Church Rock project into production.
