Futile Cycles #1: Gaggini is a multimedia project by Cristiano Berti which combines the image and story of a white marble quarry, abandoned about a hundred years ago, in the Alps, with the image and story of a marble fountain in the city of Havana.
The fountain is a piece by Giuseppe Gaggini, a sculptor whose work dates from the first half of the nineteenth century; it is called Fuente de la India, it represents a neo-classical Indian queen, and was sculpted of Carrara marble between 1835 and 1837 in Genoa, and sent by ship.
The marble walls of the quarry carry the signature of the sculptor himself, who in 1836 was given concession of the quarries in the area, which he then began to run.
History created an unexpected link between these two places, so distant from each other.
Futile Cycles #1: Gaggini will be a work of historical research carried out in Italy and Cuba to reconstruct the history of the quarry and the manufacture, shipping and installation of the sculpture. This will lead to a publication (80 pages, illustrated, languages: English, Italian, Spanish).
Futile Cycles #1: Gaggini will also consist of two interactive panoramas, one of the quarry with Gaggini’s signature on the marble wall, one of the Havana square with its fountain. They will be high-definition, immersive (360 °) and people will interact with the images by hand movement, without touching anything.
