Along with the growth the company has been able to create new jobs, with 50 new staff joining the company since the start of the year, bringing total team strength to more than 200. Matthew Greensmith, managing director, noted,“The spirit and energy of our staff is a major business driver. Service is at the core of what we do and to give good service you need a happy supportive and positive team. Many of our people have been with us for 10 years and more, but overall the team is still youthful. We are always keen to see CV’s from people who have a positive attitude and can contribute, particularly in customer support, sales and administration,” said Matt.
Crown’s core business is the sale of heating fuels to businesses and households nationwide. For this they have a mixed fleet of vehicles including small tankers for rural and difficult to access situations and agreements with other local distributors that allow them to give nationwide service. From the original oil distribution business the company has built a portfolio of complimentary services. These include the supply of road fuels, industrial lubricants, mains gas, multi-utility connection services and voice and data telecommunications.
Concern for the environment is a key company principle. All delivery mileage is carbon offset and in addition the company offers customers sustainable alternatives to conventional fuels. Crown’s recently formed environmental division specialises in the recovery and reprocessing of surplus liquid fuels from power stations and other utilities. Without recovery and reprocessing this can become a major environmental hazard. This division has completed multiple recovery projects throughout the UK and is nearing the completion of an £11.5 million contract for a major energy utility company to recover and reprocess 24 million litres of fuel oil.
"The growth has been mostly organic,” Matt explained. “We bought some of the assets of the Burnley fuel and lubricant distributor Samuel Cooke & Co. last year, but this has been only one aspect of the success. All divisions are achieving growth and this is a tribute to the service ethic that drives the business and the motivation of our staff. We are really a service business that just happens to sell oil.”
The company is expanding its geographical coverage. A new depot was opened in Doncaster in 2011 to serve customers in Yorkshire and Humberside. The first southern depot opened to service west London at Iver in 2012. Branded Speedy Fuels and Lubricants, this has now been expanded with new vehicles added to the fleet operating from a hub in east London. “This is a significant addition to our business that is already profitable, so we plan to expand coverage still further,” Matt concluded.
