Iowa City, IA, United States, 2013/07/18 - NerdWallet considers hours worked, commuting times, and annual earnings - IowaCityArea.com.
NerdWallet, a financial literacy and consumer advocacy website, has compiled a list of the best places for work-life balance in a nationwide study and Iowa City is among the top 20.
According to the United Nations, 85.8 percent of males and 66.5 percent of females in the U.S. work more than 40 hours per week. NerdWallet wanted to learn where in the U.S. people work hard but also have time for other things, as a healthy work-life balance can lead to reduced stress levels and increased life satisfaction, among other benefits.
NerdWallet ranked Iowa City, Iowa, as the 13th best place for work-life balance after assessing the area’s median hours worked per week, average commute time, and median earnings for full-time, year-round workers.
Mark Nolte, ICAD Group President, says local interstate commerce companies are realizing the benefits of offering work-life balance. “Our company culture series this past year helped explain that companies with happier workers have happier customers, which directly impacts the bottom line,” said Nolte. “As we continue to focus on the need for workforce in this area, company culture remains a core issue.”
In Iowa City, workers typically work 36.3 hours a week and only spend 18.2 minutes commuting to work, leaving time for other activities and obligations. The median earning for male full-time, year-round workers is $44,442; for females it is $39,047.
“Iowa City is one of two Iowa cities to make our list of best places for work-life balance, the other being Ames,” said NerdWallet analyst Divya Raghavan. “A short commute paired with reasonable hours means Iowa City residents have more free time to run everyday errands, spend time with friends and family, or do whatever else they want to do.”
“Much of that free time is spent on volunteering and giving back to our community,” adds Nolte. “In addition to high work-life balance, our area also consistently ranks high in volunteerism, which helps show the pride of living and working in Iowa City.”
Other Midwest college communities Ames, Iowa; Bloomington-Normal, Ill; and Mankato-North Mankato, Minn. also made the NerdWallet list.
