Bioo Scientific recently participated as a training site in the Cochran Fellowship Program, providing training in ELISAs, lateral flow and enzymatic assays to a delegation from Turkmenistan. The Cochran Fellowship is a collaboration between the National Center for Foreign Animal and Zoonotic Disease Defense (FAZD Center), the Norman Borlaug Institute for International Agriculture, and the USDA Foreign Agricultural Service (USDA-FAS). The program provides training to agricultural and agribusiness professionals from middle-income countries, emerging markets, and emerging democracies with the aim of improving their local agricultural systems and enhancing trade relations with the United States. Over two weeks in June, the Turkmen Cochran Fellows visited US academic and private institutions for specialized training in using novel diagnostic, pharmaceutical, and food and feed quality testing methods.
Participants from the Turkmenistan delegation were leaders in the development of a modern laboratory operations and management systems in key state and private veterinary services. At Bioo Scientific they received training in methods for rapid detection of microbial and industrial contaminants, natural toxins, constituents, hormones, antibiotics and other veterinary drug residues in food and feed. Training of these Cochran Fellows was provided by Bioo Scientific staff member Paul Morrison and Drs. Lance Ford, Joe Krebs, and Sandesh Subramanya.
Representing Turkmenistan as Cochran Fellows were:
• Dr. Rejepmuhammet Berdiniyazov, a veterinary practitioner at the Ahal Veterinary Service which provides services to both state farms and private farmers, focusing primarily on sheep
• Dr. Yhlas Habibullayev, head of the epizootic department for the State Veterinary Service in Ashgabat
• Dr. Hangeldy Ilbegiyev, a senior veterinarian at the Mary Province Veterinary Laboratory
• Dr. Iskander Mommayev, head of the veterinary laboratory at the Oguzhan District Veterinary Service
• Dr. Dovletgeldi Mominov, chief of the Atymyrat Veterinary Department at the Atamyrat Veterinary Service
The delegation was accompanied by Arzigul Ovezlieva, an interpreter with the U.S. Department of Agriculture’s Foreign Agricultural Service.
In collaboration with the FAZD Center, Bioo Scientific will also host a Research Fellow from Bulgaria funded through the Borlaug Fellowship Program in biotechnology research in the Fall.
