EnerNOC, Inc., a leading provider of energy intelligence software, today announced that since June 24, 2013, it has dispatched approximately 850 megawatts of demand response capacity roughly equivalent to eight fossil-fuel burning peaking power plants in the Western United States, largely in response to continued heat waves that have threatened grid stability or caused prices to spike throughout the region. Hundreds of commercial, institutional, industrial, and agricultural customers in California, Idaho, Utah, and New Mexico were deployed across fourteen dispatches, helping to restore system balance and stabilize prices.
“Because buildings retain heat, it takes more energy on day three, four, and five of a heat wave to cool the same amount of space. This heat wave has been unrelenting in many areas, taxing the grid and creating an increased need for power,” explained Tim Healy, Chairman and CEO of EnerNOC. “By shedding flexible load strategically across thousands of sites, we helped to ensure that stable, reliable power was delivered to millions of people affected by this heat wave. Demand response as a resource is now integrated into many utilities’ portfolios so that energy use associated with heat waves of this nature can be managed without utilizing more expensive peaking power plants.
