The American Canoe Association’s Safety Education & Instruction Department recently received grant funding from Outdoor Nation, an organization dedicated to getting children involved in healthy outdoor activities, to design and implement a kayak fishing event for underserved youth from the Greater Richmond, VA area. This event is to be held on Saturday, June 22nd at the Rappahannock River Valley National Wildlife Refuge in Warsaw, VA. The ACA has partnered with Blue Sky Fund, Virginia Fishing Adventures, and other local volunteers to provide this program for 20 youth from the Big Brothers Big Sisters program of Greater Richmond & Tri-Cities. This program provides the students with exposure to fishing from the shore as well as from a kayak. In addition, it provides them with pertinent boating safety instruction and they will acquire a greater understanding of fishing’s role in the natural world.

This program encourages youth to explore the benefits of a healthy, active, outdoor lifestyle through human powered recreation and sustainable fishing practices. The education that they receive in regards to safe boating for example, wearing lifejackets can be transferred to any future boating activity whether its paddle, sail, or power based. The acquisition of kayaks and related fishing equipment, which is to be donated to the Blue Sky Fund youth engagement organization, will increase the local community’s ability to replicate this program and expose additional youth to the joys and benefits of kayak fishing. In addition, through the partnerships made as part of this program, the youth and their adult chaperones will begin to get connected with the local resources for paddling, fishing, and outdoor recreation opportunities.
