You may not have heard of Almunecar but the chances are that you will in the future. Almunecar is a small Spanish town which is the main tourist destination of the Costa Tropical (also known as the Costa de Granada) which lies between the provinces of Malaga and Almeria on the south coast of Spain. Largely ignored by foreign visitors during Spain's tourism boom and barely touched by developers during the years of over development the area has remained popular with Spanish tourists from across Spain.

One of the reasons that international tourists as well as package holidays never discovered this area was the lack of good access and although the coastal motorway is not complete the most important parts that link Almunecar to Malaga airport as well as the coast to Granada have been completed.

As a result of its popularity as a resort for Spanish visitors the town has all the facilities required to provide a destination for international tourists with good hotel quality and availability, restaurants and attractions. Since the beginning of the year Almunecar has hosted more than 400 travel agents from across the world, including Scandinavia, Russia and Asia. The last of these visits was part od a promotional campaign called "Fam Trip" at the beginning of June where fifty travel agents enjoyed a weekend getting to know the traditional seaside town, having been invited by the wholesale agency Traveltool. This was a result of an agreement finalised earlier this year between the Town Hall of Almunecar and the internet based travel site Logitravel, who work with 1100 wholesale independent agencies, to promote the area.The municipal coordinator Almuñécar Tourism stressed that the visit is part of the promotional campaign with different travel agents and tour operators, counting with the collaboration of local hoteliers.

The group visited several establishments agents three and four stars of Almuñécar and La Herradura where they met and gastronomy facilities as they were treated to snacks, lunch and dinner. Meanwhile, the Tourism Department sexitano offered a typical lunch at the resort Almuñecar Venta Luciano located in the heart of the Green River Valley.

"This destination which is the tourist capital of the Costa Tropical, is increasingly visited but it is still a little known destination. Almuñécar offers good quality hotel facilities and also has a lot to do, as we have seen during this visit,"stated the sales manager, Ignacio Puig. He also highlighted that the area is not only for summer holidays but is suitable for relaxing breaks throughout the year. The Costa Tropical has the highest winter temperatures in mainland Europe and yet has a winter ski resort in the Sierra Nevada mountains just south of Granada and just an hour from its sunny beaches.

Other signs that demonstrate the areas growing popularity is the recently approved project to build Spain's first seven star hotel‘Bahía Fenicia’ in a prominent position overlooking the sea on the edge of the town. The project by Banyan Tree Holdings will involve an investment of over 230 million Euros. British Airways has also reached agreement with the city of Granada to begin providing flights from the UK to the airport in Granada which will help to further open up the area.
