Together with Lahmeyer International, the Lahmeyer group company Hydroprojekt Ingenieurgesellschaft will take over the design and approval planning.
Already between 2007 and 2010, Hydroprojekt Ingenieurgesellschaft and Lahmeyer International carried out several studies in order to determine the possibilities for rehabilitation of the plant operated by EnBW Kraftwerke AG. The experts involved also identified the potential for pumped storage plants near Forbach village. In the years following, Hydroprojekt Ingenieurgesellschaft prepared the technical documentation for the regional planning procedure at the new site location. The gained solutions cover the construction of two new pumped storage plants above and below the Schwarzenbach dam (upper and lower scheme). The engineering joint venture PSW Forbach was awarded the contract for the design and approval planning for the project. This joint venture consists of Geoconsult ZT GmbH and Lahmeyer International GmbH as partners under the leadership of Hydroprojekt Ingenieurgesellschaft mbH.
An underground powerhouse with 225 MW capacity and a gross head of approx. 319 m developed by the joint venture turned out to be the preferred solution for the upper scheme. This will use the Schwarzenbach dam as lower reservoir. A new upper reservoir on the nearby “Seekopf” hill, formed by a circular embankment and a storage volume of approx. 2.2 million m³, will be built. The upper scheme design was recently submitted to the client for review. For the lower scheme, the existing Schwarzenbach plant will be replaced by a new 50 MW pumped storage plant with a gross head of approx. 360 m. In this case, the Schwarzenbach dam will serve as upper reservoir, the lower reservoir will be the existing Forbach compensation reservoir, being expanded by 100,000 m³ by means of an underground water reservoir.
In addition to the upper and lower schemes planning, the joint venture studied options for rehabilitation and renewal of the Murg power plant at the Forbach site with nearly 100 years of operational history. The team recommended the integration of the new Murg turbines into the underground powerhouse of the lower scheme pumped storage plant as the most favourable solution.
