Homewatch CareGivers Northbrook is pleased to share the news that client Yolanda Imhoff recently received two awards recognizing her accomplishments and service in World War II.
The first award, presented April 29, 2013 by Illinois State Comptroller, Judy Baar Topinka, reads,“Your personal and professional accomplishments have made you one of Illinois' distinguished Women's History Month honorees. Your commitment and dedication have made you a shining example for all to emulate.”
Yolanda Imhoff enlisted in the Women’s Army Corps (WAC) after her parents died when she was 21. After successfully completing radio school, she asked to be sent overseas and arrived with in Scotland on D-Day where she was with troops just behind the frontline. Her tour of duty included took her from Scotland to Chantilly, France, after a brief stay in London, and ended in Bad Kissingen, Germany. Imhoff served in the WAC from 1943-1945.
In September of 2012, the Pritzker Military Library featured Imhoff in an exhibit,“She's a WOW: Women's Service Organizations in World War II.” The library exhibit sparked an interview with Barbara Brotman of the Chicago Tribune in November 2012, where Imhoff discussed her stories and experiences in the WAC, and her involvement with the Chicago veterans. After reading this article, Topinka selected Imhoff to be honored in March 2013 for Women’s History Month.
The second award, presented by the Signal Corps, was to honor Imhoff’s service in World War II as a radio signaleer. Signaleers were responsible for recording messages in Morse code, using technology that laid the foundation for many technologies used today. One of Imhoff’s responsibilities was to intercept and record German military communications.
At 94-years-old, Imhoff lives independently in Evanston with the twice-weekly help provided by Tamika of Homewatch CareGivers Northbrook. Until recently she sang with the choir at Immanuel Lutheran Church, and she still actively participates in the church’s women’s quilt-making group, which sews more than 100 quilts each year for Lutheran Social Services.
