The Go For Yours Foundation will kick off its first annual benefit concert at 8 pm., Thursday, May 23, 2013, at the Elbo Room, featuring MTV’s Washington Heights star Jonathan “Audubon” Perez along with other special guests.
The evening’s event will be hosted by author and creator of the Go For Yours Foundation, Erika McCall, and all the proceeds will benefit the foundation. This event will feature five live acts that model the Go For Yours attitude and are in the process of following their own dreams.
Our featured act is MTV’s Washington Heights rapper, Jonathan “Audubon” Perez. Washington Heights is a show that depicts the lives of young people following their dreams and trying to make it out of their neighborhood. Perez created this show to represent the passion and dedication it takes to make your dreams come true and overcome any negativity that tries to discourage your dreams.
Jonathan Perez’s story relates directly to young people following their dreams. He tells us his story about how he was able to overcome the obstacles in his life,“I was used to people being too scared to make their dreams come true. So now that I’m working towards that, I want to show how people from the ‘hood’ can be really real and make it.”
“In order to successfully launch the foundation and programs, the foundation needs to raise at least $5,000,” says Erika McCall. In addition to raising money, the purpose of this concert is to allow the artists to bring positive attention to the Chicago rap scene.
Erika McCall created The Go For Yours Foundation to help our youth fulfill their dreams, goals, and desires in order to build hope and a future. This foundation stems from the book, Go For Yours, a compilation of stories about black youth who overcame the odds stacked against them in order to make their dreams come true.
“The Go for Yours Foundation allows at-risk youth to explore their passions and create a road map for success. We have begun to pilot our first program at Julian High School and are looking forward to serving more CPS students,” says Founder Erika R. McCall.
The Go For Yours Foundation empowers urban youth to create opportunities that lead to a bright future. It provides educational workshops and mentoring to teens in order to encourage youth to make decisions that will allow them to achieve their dreams, goals, and desires.
