To educate the public about the importance of genomic science, the National Human Genome Research Institute (NHGRI) has contracted with d’Vinci Interactive to create a companion educational website to promote and supplement the upcoming “Genome: Unlocking Life’s Code” exhibit at the Smithsonian National Museum of Natural History.
d’Vinci Interactive will design a multimedia-rich, interactive educational website that will give educators, students and the general public a deeper understanding of this fascinating subject before and after their trip. In addition, the website will provide an educational experience for those unable to visit the Smithsonian in person. Initial plans for the website include an interactive timeline, a virtual tour, classroom materials and exclusive video content among many other features. The Unlocking Life's Code interim website is live and the final site will launch in June.
The National Museum of Natural History exhibit will focus on the human genome and look at human identity in the context of the natural world. The 2,500 square-foot exhibition is the product of a partnership between the Museum and NHGRI. The exhibition and website will celebrate the 10th anniversary of sequencing of the human genome and the 60th anniversary of Watson and Crick’s discovery of the double helix structure of DNA. After a year at the Museum, the exhibit will travel around the country, extending its reach to an even broader audience. The website will remain functional and up-to-date after the exhibit closes.
“Surveys show that only a small number of Museum visitors know what genomics is and why it matters, yet many also want to know more about themselves and how scientific knowledge could impact their health,” said Carla Easter, deputy chief of the Education and Community Involvement Branch at NHGRI.
“Scientists from many diverse fields and media headlines across the world assert that genomic science will impact our day-to-day lives in dramatic, and many still-to-be-imagined ways,” she added.
“We are pleased to partner with d’Vinci Interactive. The team has the capabilities and a familiarity with genomic science that makes them well qualified to create the Unlocking Life's Code website,” said Dr. Jeff Witherly, senior advisor at the National Institutes of Health/ NHGRI.
The d’Vinci team recently worked on the Talking Glossary of Genetic Terms mobile learning application, which features more than 250 common genetic terms pronounced and explained by leading scientists and professionals.
d’Vinci will develop the Unlocking Life’s Code website on the Drupal content management platform alongside its parent company, JPL, an integrated marketing agency from Harrisburg, PA.
