The Google Apps marketplace was founded by Google in 2010 as a market for developers to create applications that integrate with Google's core suite of products (gmail, calendar, drive, groups) to expand functionality. The education section of the marketplace is one of the fastest growing and recently was joined by OpenClass form Pearson, one of the word largest EdTech companies.
CourseDirector is the first education application in the Google Apps Marketplace to be acquired, following on from several other high profile acquisitions in the marketplace including Salesforce.com’s acquisition of Manymoon and VMware’s acquisition of SlideRocket.
CourseDirector allows schools using Google Apps to create a Learning Management System (LMS), also called a Virtual Learning Environment (VLE), completely within Google Apps. CourseDirector has roughly 50% of its customers in the US with higher education clients such as Rutgers and school districts such as North Babylon in New York. It also has a solid client base in the UK with schools such as Eton College and several higher Education Institutions including Middlesex University.
CourseDirector was founded in Prague, Czech Republic in 2011 by Dan Taylor, MIke Gouteff and Aleh Filipovich and quickly rose to become one of the leading applications in the Education (EDU) category of the Google Apps Marketplace.
