Adelphi University’s Ruth S. Ammon School of Education is proud to announce that it will host its Annual Autism Conference co-sponsored by the Asperger Syndrome and High Functioning Autism Association (AHA) on Saturday, April 20, 2013, from 8:30 a.m. to 3:30 p.m. in the Ruth S. Harley University Center, 1 South Avenue, Garden City, NY. The conference will include keynote speakers, panels and workshops. The two keynote speakers will be Liane Holliday Willey, Ed.D. and David Finch, who are both adults on the autism spectrum. Dr. Willey will present a keynote entitled “Staying Safe, Healthy and Happy—A Practical Guide for People with Asperger’s Syndrome.” David Finch will deliver a lecture entitled “Beyond the Best Practices.” The workshops are varied and provide practical information and assistance for independence.
The Annual Autism Conference increases understanding of the remarkable strength and potential of individuals on the autism spectrum. The day’s activities offer insights and strategies for self-awareness, self-advocacy, transitions, relationships, employment and independence. The AHA is a not-for-profit organization working full time to enhance the lives of individuals and families affected by autism spectrum conditions through conferences, support groups, website, hotline and informative AHA eNews. The ongoing partnership with Adelphi and its Ammon School of Education enhances it all.
Workshop subjects for the conference include: Transitioning from pediatric to adult healthcare, Financial Literacy/Money Management; Effective Communication For Positive ASD Family Interactions, Bullying, Harassment and Intimidation; The Decision To Drive; Aspies in the Workplace; Current Trends in the Pharmacological Treatment of Autism Spectrum Conditions; Kiss Me, You Genius: Strategies for Thriving in Neurologically Mixed Relationships; and Legal Hot Topics: Does My Child Really Need A Guardian? The Pros and Cons of Guardianship.
