Asset Strategies International (ASI), a DC area precious metals and foreign currency dealer in business since 1982, announced a strategic alliance with professional numismatist and rare coin scholar Douglas Winter. Mr. Winter is widely recognized as one of the world's leading expert on early American coinage.
"We've dealt in numismatics for the past 30 years," said ASI President and co-Founder Michael Checkan. "Now, after two years of intensive study of the rare coin market, we see strong reasons to offer a Rare Coin Portfolio program of well-chosen numismatics through ASI’s First Collectors Guild Alliance.
"Many of our precious metals clients are also rare coin buyers. We've seen, time after time, abuse by coin marketers who offer our clients the wrong coins at the wrong price. So we intend to change that.”
Mr. Winter has written twelve books on rare coins including the standard reference works on gold coins from the Branch Mints and similar publications on $20 Liberty gold coins, among others. He is a member of the Board of Experts of PCGS (Professional Coin Grading Service); a member of PNG (Professional Numismatists Guild); and a minority owner of CAC (Certified Acceptance Corporation).
"I have worked quietly with ASI for the past two years. It’s a unique company with perhaps the finest reputation in the field of precious metals and foreign currencies. I’m looking forward to building fine portfolios of classic rare coins for their clients,” said Mr. Winter.
ASI also announced the involvement of longtime rare coin PR and Marketing Executive Richard Spring for the Rare Coin Portfolio Program. Richard was instrumental in the successful launch of PCGS 25 years ago. He has directed the marketing efforts of several major rare coin companies.
“Richard guided us through a two year process of “vetting” the coin industry and brought in Douglas Winter to work with us,” said Mr. Checkan. "He knows how the coin market works, and his knowledge and experience will be a big benefit to us going forward.”
"Our approach is not based on 'selling coins.’ Instead, we’re providing a rare coin portfolio strategy that positions our valued clients for success in the future. We are now well-represented at all major coin shows and auctions by Doug Winter, who gives our clients access to the finest rare coins personally selected by one of the leading experts in the field,” Mr. Checkan concluded.
Other key members of the ASI Rare Coin Portfolio team include Jon Swyers, who has worked “hands on” for the past seven years in retail coin sales with a specialty in numismatics; and Steve Emerick, who trained in numismatics under ASI's co-founder and resident coin expert, the late Glen O. Kirsch, and now oversees the operations of the Rare Coin Portfolio program.
