Bess the Book Bus begins its 5th annual Transitions/VSP “Success is in Sight Tour” to promote literacy and give free books to the nation's most underserved children. This year, Bess will visit over 35 states and serve 25,000 plus kids, most of which cannot afford books on their own. Bess' kids will also gain access to to free comprehensive eye exams and free glasses fitted with Transitions Lenses, courtesy of Transitions Optical and VSP. To date, the “Success is in Sight” tours have served over 60,000 families in 48 states, donating more than 450,000 books and giving thousands of underserved children free eye exams and glasses.
The first leg of the tour started March 16th and runs through the middle of April. Bess is currently in the Mississippi Delta, and will continue on to Tennessee before riding into Navajo nation. Oregon and California will then see Bess, before she goes to Texas for a “Fueling Good” event with CITGO.
Bess the Book Bus was founded by Jennifer Frances in 2002. Jennifer continues to be the driving force behind Bess, taking the 2011 Sprinter 3500 donated by Mercedes-Benz USA across the country every year to share her love and enthusiasm for reading with the country's most under-served children. Bess the Book Bus is also partnering with local authors, artists, and musicians in an effort to return art and music programming to the most under-served schools.
“Our country's children are not receiving equal access to the basic resources they need to become successful adults,” said Frances. “The schools in our poorest neighborhoods are often neglected buildings, bereft of the things children need most: art, music, outdoor play areas, healthy food, and quality literature.”
Bess aims to attract a few new sponsors this year, so she may continue her quest to inspire children. “Without access to quality books in the home, a child’s ability to foster their creativity and imagination and become life-long readers is greatly hindered,” said Frances. “A child that grows without these critical influences in his or her life is less likely to become a productive member of our community.” Look for Bess the Book Bus driving around town during her 2013 “Success is in Sight” tour.
