Friends of the Supergrid last year event confirmed that no “show-stoppers” exist to the development of a European Supergrid. The availability of key grid technologies is assumed and point-to-point connections could be expanded to multi-terminal building blocks for a larger overlaid grid. The critical time-line for the introduction of new technologies lies now primarily in solving non-technical issues such as political support and leadership, regulatory intelligence and revenue models.
How far has the Supergrid come and far does it have to go to become a reality? What are the benefits for society? Are the existing regulatory barriers being removed or lowered? What are the real investments in the Supergrid concept? What concrete actions can be taken to improve public awareness and political acceptance?
