Last week new Illinois start-up Ohana, a maternity and parenting services company, was among the first businesses from diverse industries across the state to file benefit corporation registration forms under Bill SB2987 (now Public Act 097-0885) with the Business Services Office of the Illinois Secretary of State. The Bill, sponsored by Democratic Senator Michael Frerichs and Democratic Representative Sara Feigenholtz, establishes a corporate form to help create high quality jobs and a more sustainable and inclusive economy. Benefit corporations enjoy legal protection to create value for society, not just shareholders, while meeting higher standards of accountability and transparency. Illinois businesses will be more competitive and attractive in the global marketplace and, enjoy more freedom in defining success.
Says founder and current student at Northwestern University’s Kellogg School of Management Jocelyn Alt,“The benefit corporation structure allows Ohana to prioritize our social mission of helping expecting and new parents across the income spectrum experience a joyful and stress-free journey to parenthood – while still enabling us to grow and scale our company as a for-profit business in ways that can be difficult for a non-profit organization.”
Ohana (ohanaparents.com) is a maternity and parenting services company whose vision is to help new parents “find their village” and welcome their baby with joy and confidence. Ohana, serving parents in Chicago and the Northern Suburbs, has officially launched its services as of January 2, 2013. More information can be found at ohanaparents.com.
Based on founder Jocelyn Alt’s six years of experience working with expecting parents, Ohana aims to address the stress and uncertainty many expectant parents face during their pregnancy. Fifteen minute OB appointments are often too short and do not feel like the right setting to ask many of the questions parents have, and searching on the Internet can be unreliable and often makes couples feel more scared rather than less. In addition, because people are increasingly living far from family and close friends, many couples feel isolated and do not have a cohort of peers with whom they can share experiences and gain support. Ohana was founded to fill these gaps in the existing system.
• Ohana’s services include:
o Childbirth classes, specifically designed to answer the questions most important to expecting parents and to facilitate conversation and connection among other parents at the same stage of pregnancy;
o Doulas, who are birthing assistants hired directly by couples to provide personalized informational and emotional support during pregnancy and labor;
o Breastfeeding counseling;
o Concierge services, including consultations about choosing an obstetrician, midwife, or doula; diet planning during pregnancy; decision-making about tests and other choices during pregnancy and new parenting;
o Mom&Baby / Dad&Baby social groups, where new parents can meet others at the same stage of parenting as they are.
The word ohana means family in Hawaiian, and refers to one’s inner circle of both family and close friends.
