An Innisfil woman has joined the “Armour Lip Charmours” Movember moustache-growing team in an effort to raise local awareness for men’s health issues, particularly the need for further prostate cancer research. Although she cannot grow a moustache of her own, Shari McNamara is wearing a “Mo” which is drawn in pencil on a daily basis throughout the month of November.
The Movember campaign is an annual event where men across the world grow moustaches while raising funds and awareness for men’s health, specifically prostate cancer. Originally started in Melbourne, Australia, Movember has ‘grown’ to epic proportions. In 2011, over 854,000 men around the world participated, raising $125.7 million CAD.
“I think that everyone should be educated about this horrible disease”, states McNamara, an employee of Busch Systems in Barrie. “A member of my family is living with prostate cancer and it’s tough on him and the whole family. Friends and family need to understand that it is something that can be discussed and should be discussed”.
McNamara is not the first unique member of the “Armour Lip Charmours” Movember team. 8-year old Cameron Pepper from Orillia is also sporting a pencilled moustache throughout “Movember” in an effort to raise awareness and funds about this disease. According to the Canadian Cancer Society, 26,500 men will be diagnosed with prostate cancer in Canada in 2012 alone.
“I believe women can help too”, states McNamara. “The more people we have raising funds, the better things will be for those afflicted with prostate cancer as well as their loved ones”.
