Carmel Valley, CA, United States, 2012/11/05 - After six years of R&D, Wireless Strategies, Inc. announces an innovative new technology that significantly decreases the cost of microwave backhaul and broadband access, and boosts both spectrum efficiency and speed by over 1000%.

At the recent annual convention of the Wireless Internet Service Providers Association in Las Vegas, Wireless Strategies, Inc. (WSI) unveiled a new method of utilizing licensed spectrum that makes it possible to lower the cost of 4G/Wi-Fi backhaul and broadband access by a remarkable 80%, create a ten-fold increase in spectrum efficiency, as well as raise the data-speed bar to over 100 Megabits for the average US household.
"After six years of R&D, we're proud to help usher in one of the first major advancements in microwave communications in the last 30 years," said Michael Mulcay, Chairman and CTO of WSI.
In a presentation entitled "The Near Future – Licensed PtMP Backhaul" Mulcay explained,"The solution we found was to use existing FCC rules in licensed frequency bands to concurrently coordinate multiple links. No rule change was necessary, and licenses that support this new methodology have already been issued by the FCC in the 6 GHz and 11 GHz bands."
Mulcay described how this innovation will open up tremendous new broadband markets, including the many unserved and underserved areas where fiber and conventional microwave are prohibitively expensive. This includes the 85% of small- and medium-sized businesses that currently are not economically viable to reach with fiber, as well as the approximately 23 million US households where broadband of any kind is not available.
Nationwide, this translates into billions of dollars of new broadband revenue.
Mulcay went on to explain that these licenses support operation in Frequency Division Duplex (FDD) and Time Division Duplex (TDD), both in Point-to-Point (PtP) and Point-to-Multi-Point (PtMP). While FDD-TDD PtP nearly doubles the spectrum efficiency of traditional PtP microwave, the truly extraordinary benefits come in operating PtMP – lowering the cost of licensed backhaul and access by over 80%, and creating a ten-fold increase in spectrum efficiency. It also increases data speed ten-fold – where households are currently offered service up to 10 Megabits, this would increase to at least 100 Megabits.
Mulcay said he expects licensed PtMP radios to be available in the next 180 to 270 days.
"It's an exciting time to be in microwave," said Mulcay. "With this new development, over the next three to five years the entire industry will undergo a fundamental change in the way it operates."
Wireless Strategies, Inc. (WSI) was formed in 2006 to find innovative ways to significantly lower the cost of backhaul and enterprise access, increase the effective use of spectrum, and to facilitate the commercialization of these innovations.
WSI's management team (wirelessstrategies.net) has over 150 years of combined experience in the communications industry, including the design and manufacture of state-of-the-art microwave equipment, instigating regulatory change, and construction and operation of wireless, microwave and satellite networks.
