New technologies combine to make social gaming off-network increasingly convenient and compelling for consumers.
Antix Labs has announced that its advanced gaming service now supports Wi-Fi Direct. Games that would have taken a few minutes to send from one device to another using Bluetooth can be shared in a matter of seconds with Wi-Fi Direct. Users can now distribute, challenge and then play in multi-player mode without any need to have immediate access to a service provider’s network or a router.
There is clear empirical evidence that consumers prefer to play socially in immediate proximity and across different devices. Combined with network operators’ concerns of insufficient bandwidth capacity and coverage, Antix provides a way for users to distribute games off-network as well as over the cloud, beaming, challenging and then playing with their friends peer-to-peer.
Oracle’s President, Mark Hurd recently quoted market projections of a twenty-fold increase in data traffic over the next 8 years. Major network operators have been making public demands for data traffic to be driven off-network as available bandwidth remains, alongside consumer retention, their biggest challenge. To meet this infrastructure challenge operators such as Telkomsel and other Telkom Indonesia companies are now deploying Antix to allow consumers to share and play multi-player across platforms off-network as well as across the cloud. In the west, publishers may want consumers to share large games with friends who are not on contract but are on pay-as-you-go; with Antix, games are shared, money is exchanged but networks aren't unnecessarily burdened with data traffic.
For the Antix Game Player, the addition of support for Wi-Fi Direct fits perfectly into the growing trend towards the viral distribution of games off-network. With Wi-Fi Direct, consumers can share and play both small and large games beamed directly between devices with data transmission times cut by 95% compared to traditional Bluetooth technologies. The performance provides a perfect environment for off-network multi-player mode.
Evan Spytma, Regional Director of Australia and SE Asia for PopCap said,“We’ve seen how consumers can send Plants vs. Zombies from one device to another in a matter of just a few seconds using the Antix Game Player with Wi-Fi Direct. Within the growth and emerging markets of South East Asia, where networks are overloaded and slow, this viral distribution capability has enormous benefits to game developers and publishers as well as to the consumer.”
Antix focuses on providing real social gaming and services for consumers with innovative, unique and attractive user models that are highly beneficial both to publishers and service providers. New technologies such as Wi-Fi Direct mean that Antix has services relevant for today's devices, not just for the future. Users can virally share a single native game between different devices with different fields of use, different chipsets, different operating systems, different input devices and different screen resolutions, all in ways that protect the rights and the revenues of the publishers while simultaneously giving an exceptional and much improved experience for the user.
Francis Charig, Antix’s founder, said,“Products such as Marmalade are developer focused and designed to help reduce engineering time and cost. The Antix Game Player does do that of course and provides comprehensive support for the cloud. But what makes Antix fundamentally different from any other business today is that we have built a distribution platform for high quality games incorporating a wealth of IP-protected technologies that allow consumers to share and play off-network across different devices. We meet both current and future demands of networks as well as utilize the capabilities in-the-home and on-the-move of consumers’ TVs, STBs, phones, tablets and PCs."
About Antix Labs, Ltd (Antix)
Antix (antixlabs.com) has developed the Antix Game Player incorporating a consumer-focused distribution file format and service that makes games even more viral than music and video whilst still protecting the rights and the revenues of the developers. It enables consumers to copy, share, challenge and play with others not only via a service provider’s network but also off-network by means of wireless technologies such as Bluetooth and Wi-Fi Direct. Antix connects consumers across feature phones and smartphones, tablets, TVs, set top boxes, PCs and other devices even when a provider’s network is inaccessible, intermittent, slow or full as is the reality in home and on mobile across most of the world. The company offers the Game Player, corresponding tools, certification mechanism, optional white-label store and an optional game warehouse necessary to deploy a complete service offering. The Antix Game Service is being used as a core gaming component by major operators, broadcasters, device manufacturers and retailers across the globe. Headquartered in the Reading Enterprise Centre in Reading, England and with offices in America and Asia, Antix was founded by Francis Charig, a World Economic Forum Technology Pioneer.
