Blue Apple Fitness, an eco-friendly fitness facility, has recently opened its doors to the Wicker Park/Bucktown Neighborhood. Alongside its recent grand opening, Blue Apple Fitness has launched a Community Wellness Project to fight the growing Public Health concern of overweight and obesity in adults and children. This project is in direct response to “The Surgeon General’s Vision for a Healthy and Fit Nation 2010” where business and government leaders were asked to find creative solutions to combat this crisis.
According to the American Heart Association, 65% of American adults and 31.7% of U.S. children (ages 2 – 19) are obese or overweight. The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention acknowledge the obesity-related conditions of heart disease, stroke, type 2 diabetes, and certain kinds of cancer to be some of the leading causes of preventable death. Blue Apple Fitness has made it their mission to educate, train, and facilitate the maintenance of a healthy lifestyle.
Blue Apple Fitness’ mission and its Community Wellness Project stem from personal reasons. “After my father suddenly passed away from heart disease at the age of 53, I wanted to spare other families the heartache of losing a loved one to a preventable disease,” stated Business Owner and Founder, Katelyn Newey. “My dad always used to say that actions speak louder than words. The launch of Blue Apple’s Community Wellness Project is my action.”
Blue Apple Fitness’ Community Wellness Project consists of multiple programs including a Runner’s Club, Walker’s Club, Youth Program, and free monthly yoga classes. Adult divisions of the project encourage insufficiently active adults to get at least thirty minutes of physical activity each day. The Youth Program inspires inactive children and youth, ages 6 – 17, to get at least sixty minutes of physical activity at least three days per week, as directed by the U.S. Surgeon General. “Exercise isn’t guess work. It’s science,” states Newey. “Fitness, dance, yoga, and personal training have measurable results that positively affect your physical and mental health.”
Blue Apple Fitness (blueapplefitness.com) has begun to partner with local small business owners in Roscoe Village, Little Italy, Logan Square, and Humboldt Park who support its mission to increase physical activity in Chicago’s neighborhood communities.
Blue Apple Fitness’ Community Wellness Project services are free and open to the public. All trainers and instructors are nationally certified professionals in their respective fields.
