Cloud Computing promises to deliver more visibility throughout the supply chain and enable collaboration between all trading partners in the network.
However much of the cloud computing information available today is very generic and does not recognise the fact that different industries will approach and engage with the cloud in different ways.
This is especially true of the supply chain where data governance and compliance issues are particularly important as organisations operate in diverse locations globally.
‘The Supply Chain Cloud’ will address the information requirements of the supply chain in regards to cloud computing and how the cloud can be deployed to enhance supply chain visibility.
All key applications and platforms will be covered in the project and we will be including input from many of the major industry bodies to ensure that the supply chain has all the relevant information it requires when evaluating the cloud and migrating applications to the cloud environment.
“Without a doubt the emergence of cloud computing as a delivery model for IT Applications and Services is very exciting and promises to transform the supply chain and how all trading partners collaborate globally.
The quest for supply chain visibility means that the supply chain is an ideal industry for the cloud due to the sheer number of partners and suppliers involved in a multinational supply chain who must collaborate to manufacture and distribute products.” states John Connors, CEO at ‘The Supply Chain Cloud’
“Cloud computing brings new possibilities for collaboration within supply chains. Basing this collaboration on open, vendor-neutral standards will encourage the development of readily- available supporting products, enabling participation by all companies, large and small, and giving flexibility by avoiding un-necessary lock-in” states Chris Harding, Director of Interoperability, The Open Group.
"Despite the simplicity of the idea of offering IT services from the "tap", cloud computing introduces several challenges to due the complexity of a landscape in which infrastructure, platforms, and software are interlinked in complex supply chains. In such complex environments cloud users, especially Government, require from cloud providers assurance that their policies are enforced along the whole service supply chain and security requirements are satisfied. That is why a strong focus on security, resilience, privacy and accountability is of fundamental importance if we want to see cloud computing finally taking off." states Daniele Cattedu, Managing Director EMEA, Cloud Security Alliance.
