Polymet Corporation, a global leader and manufacturer of wire for hardfacing, welding and thermal spraying, installed a state-of-the-art tagging and testing machine. This proprietary machine will play a critical role in Polymet’s quality assurance and will allow for increased speeds for wire tagging.
The “Libby II,” as it is called, replaced the previous Libby machine. The Libby II has modified electrical and mechanical controls to permit a more efficient and ergonomically operated machine. A new and advanced alloy detection system is in place, operating the latest in XRF technology. The integration of alloy name, diameter, and runtime data into Polymet’s SQL database allows for real-time process control. All of these changes will have a significantly positive impact on the Polymet quality system.
The new machine also has an enhanced wire feeding mechanism that will increase Polymet’s diameter processing capabilities. Todd Centers, Plant Engineering Manager at Polymet, states,“The Libby II will have an immediate impact on our daily operations here at Polymet. We will see a direct improvement in quality and output capabilities due to this machine.” Quality assurance on a wider range of diameters will drive Polymet’s continuation as an industry leader of wire for hardfacing, welding and thermal spraying.
