Nokia today announced that its Location & Commerce business is providing Planet Electronics with a combination of NAVTEQ® Map on-road and off-road content which features the regional Tracks4Africa Off-Road Guide. The data will be integrated into Planet Electronics’ range of navigation devices - bringing this particular combination of road network and specialist trail guidance to fitted system consumers for the first time. Planet Electronics produces aftermarket navigation and entertainment solutions which can be retrofitted at any point during the vehicle’s life. Coverage includes not only South Africa but also Botswana, Lesotho, Mozambique, Namibia and Swaziland.
“Many of our customers are off-road enthusiasts and we want to offer them the broadest possible navigation experience. The NAVTEQ® Map provides high quality, automotive grade data for the road network and the Tracks4Africa integrated option also powers turn-by-turn navigation on trails which are well off the beaten track – it’s the perfect combination,” explained Rayno van Heerden, Planet Electronics Director.
The NAVTEQ® Map offers the freshest possible, highly accurate map data delivered on a global scale along with a wide range of optional, premium products such as Tracks4Africa. Built from the collective travel experiences of thousands of community members, the off-road guide gives consumers peace of mind that the tracks and trails have already been driven, cycled or walked by like minded travellers.
“The NAVTEQ® Map is compiled using the same techniques worldwide to produce a single global specification but, at the same time, we understand the importance of incorporating country specific nuances into our data,” added Irvine Aitcheson, Director of Sales Sub-Saharan Africa, Nokia Location & Commerce. “The Tracks4Africa Off-Road Guide is an excellent example of localisation which enables us to offer the basis for a highly competitive and relevant navigation product for the Southern Africa market.”
