Secretary of State for Transport Douglas Alexander MP has announced that improvements to the rail links between Peterborough and Nuneaton, and Southampton and Birmingham will be considered from the Transport Innovation Fund (TIF).

Network Rail will take forward work on the detailed case for TIF funding for both schemes.
Chairman of Advantage West Midlands Nick Paul said: “Today’s announcement is a real breakthrough for the West Midlands.

“Advantage West Midlands has made the case long and hard to Government Ministers about the need to improve our connections to Britain’s ports.

“At the moment, we have the ludicrous situation in the West Midlands of our rail freight having to go through London to get to ports on the East and South Coasts. Existing rail links direct to these ports simply can’t cope.

“So companies tend to opt instead to move their freight by road. And who can blame them?

“But more lorries on the road means more congestion for everybody which holds back our economic progress.

“So today’s announcement is the first step towards addressing this transport nonsense.

“It will give the region direct access to ports by rail and will take more lorries of our roads.

“Motorists who spend most of their time sitting behind lorries from the continent on the A34, A14 and M6 will be keeping their fingers crossed that these rail improvements receive this all important funding. Advantage West Midlands will do whatever it can to make sure they do.”

Plans to look at traffic management schemes on the Birmingham Motorway Box are also included in the statement.
