This year, Bangalore will play host to the preliminary qualifier round of Indian Robot Olympiad (IRO), which leads to World Robot Olympiad (WRO) being held in Malaysia. “Robotics, as some may think, is not about huge monsters that one gets to watch in movies. Robotics is a specialized branch of technology that deals with the design, construction, operation and application of robots and computer systems for their control, sensory feedback, and information processing. Robotics, because of its structure, scope for creativity and its need for hands on application, is steadily making its way into the curriculum of students. Students are now being thought concepts of Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics using hands on robotics applications. Robotics, as we sincerely believe, is the solution to most of the complex learning challenges. IRO and WRO play a major role in popularizing the learning advantage that Robotics provides. Robot Olympiad inspires young people to be science and technology leaders, by engaging them in exciting mentor-based programs that build science, engineering and technology skills, that inspire innovation. IRO is not just a contest, but a showcase to display the analytical, logical and creative abilities of kids who have been trained in robotics” says Sajeev Karuthody, Director of Edutech.
In this event, which expects participation from over 50 prestigious schools of Bangalore and surrounding districts, children in the age group of 9-19 years will display their robotics skills in various formats. Using Lego’s NXT kits, the contestants will build robots that run on a pre-designed obstacle course. The winners are declared based on numerous parameters including design, speed and accuracy. Greenwood High International School, situated near Bellandur Circle, is the chosen venue for the challenge and is being equipped to handle the huge visitor and participant base that has religiously been a part of previous 6 Indian Robot Olympiads.
The stage is all set and the students are on their toe. May the best man, nah, may the best robot win!
