Mr. Burton was nominated for the award by Adelphi University President Robert A. Scott. Mr. Burton and 26 other awardees will be recognized at a special gala dinner on Thursday, September 20, from 6:00 to 10:00 pm. at The Crest Hollow Country Club, 8325 Jericho Turnpike, Woodbury, NY.

Long Island Business News created the CFO of the Year Awards to “recognize Long Island’s top financial officers for their outstanding fiscal leadership and asset management, contributions to their company’s performance, their contribution and commitment to their profession and organizations as well as their involvement in the community.” Awardees were selected by a committee of business leaders based on the biographical information sent to them reflecting the career and professional accomplishments of the nominees.

Mr. Burton joined Adelphi University in 1991 as associate treasurer, after spending 13 years at Deloitte & Touche and leaving as a senior audit manager. He was named CFO and treasurer in 2002 and senior vice president in 2008, responsible for all fiscal operations, business affairs, contract administration, human resources/labor relations and risk management for the University. Under his financial leadership during the past decade, total assets at Adelphi have more than doubled to over $375 million and endowed funds have almost tripled to about $135 million. He has also overseen over $250 million worth of construction in the past 10 years. An advocate for a system of educational excellence, Mr. Burton has also balanced interests of parents of school-aged children and those of property taxpayers, when he spent eight years serving on the school board in the Northport/East Northport School District, retiring as vice president of the board in 2005.

Additionally, under Mr. Burton’s watch, Adelphi is one of just a few colleges and universities to have its bond rating increased by Standard & Poors over the past five years. As Adelphi’s financial leader, he has significant involvement with the 25-member Board of Trustees. “Being a key liaison to the Board has given me great insight into being a CFO and my strengths and weaknesses,” he said. Serving Adelphi for more than two decades, Mr. Burton has gained the trust of its faculty and is viewed as a superb member of its senior team.

“We are pleased to see that Long Island Business News has recognized what we already know, that we have a CFO worthy of such recognition,” said Dr. Robert A. Scott, president of Adelphi University. “I look forward to Mr. Burton’s ongoing contributions as Adelphi continues to grow and flourish.”

Adelphi University currently enrolls nearly 8,000 students from 43 states and 45 foreign countries. With its main campus in Garden City and centers in Manhattan, Hauppauge, and Poughkeepsie, the University maintains a commitment to liberal studies in tandem with rigorous professional preparation. The first institution of higher education for liberal arts and sciences on Long Island, today the University consists of many schools and programs—The College of Arts and Sciences, Derner Institute of Advanced Psychological Studies, Honors College, Robert B. Willumstad School of Business, Ruth S. Ammon School of Education, University College, and the Schools of Nursing and Social Work.

“My industry is highly competitive with pressures from lower priced public institutions and over 110 private colleges in New York State alone,” said Mr. Burton. “Adelphi’s success can be attributed to the fact that we’ve been able to show the value of our education—recognized as a Best Buy in the Fiske Guide to Colleges for seven consecutive years—and the strength of our academic programs as evidenced as by our strong retention and graduation rates and the outcomes our graduates are able to achieve once they leave us.”
