Bidders from more than eleven countries participated in the Cup of Excellence Guatemala online live auction July 12 with proceeds of $569,396.00 USD and an average per pound price of $10.91. Bidding began at 6:00 am in Seattle, which was already 9:00 am for bidders in New York. While Europeans bid in the afternoon, those in Tokyo and Seoul participated past traditional office hours at 9:00 and 10:00 pm. Bidders down under in Australia and New Zealand were facing the midnight hour. Varied time differences did not deter bidders who were united in securing their favorite coffees of Guatemala Cup of Excellence winners.

Because many of the producers win perennially, long-term buying relationships have been established and the way has been paved for first-time winners to receive impressive premiums. Of twenty-three winning farms, many will go to Japan, a country which has seen its consumption of specialty coffee rise continuously for the last ten years. Watarru & Co., Ltd. secured four lots with their highest bids, while Maruyama Coffee buying group successfully outbid others for the first place coffee, El Injerto.
Leah Warren, Regional Manager, Mercanta North America LLC and Mercanta Ltd. based in the UK states,“Cup of Excellence competitions and the auctions that ensue are the best method for rewarding farmers for top quality coffee.” Mercanta bid and successfully won three distinctive lots for their customers in the USA, Hong Kong, Europe and Australia.
Additional winning bidders who secured these delicious award winning coffees were Terrarosa of Korea and Onyx of USA each awarded two lots. From Japan Time’s Club on behalf of C-COOP, Kyokuto Fadie Corporation, Nagahama Coffee Inc. and World Coffee each secured one winning lot, Remaining lots were acquired by top bidders from Café Imports USA, United Coffee UK & Ireland Limited, Bewley’s of Ireland, Coffee Supreme Limited of New Zealand, Kaffebrenneriet AS of Norway, CAMEC S.A. of Guatemala and Trabocca, an importer based in the Netherlands.
This is the fourth successful Cup of Excellence auction of the summer season,
