On July 7th, the 5-part wildlife series ‘Wildest Latin America’ series directed by Richard Kirby, started broadcasting on Animal Planet. The series will be continue during July and August on Mondays, Tuesdays and Saturdays ending on August 3rd, 2012.
Series director and DoP Richard Kirby spent most of 2011 shooting for the series in Peru, Bolivia, and Brazil. Delivering ‘epic’ camerawork for the series was not easy, as the production had only 3 weeks of filming per episode and a limited budget. However, with an enthusiastic team and Kirby's vast experience shooting high end wildlife films for the BBC Natural History Unit and a lot of hard work, they achieved a visually stunning and remarkable wildlife documentary series.
Kirby had also just taken delivery of a new time-lapse motion control system that enabled him to shoot tracking time-lapses for “Wildest Latin America” with a real cinematic quality.
“Amazon is my favorite film in the series for one very memorable reason. The story we went out there to shoot is not the story we came back with. This really reminded me of how important it is to have a flexible script and a flexible schedule especially when you have such a small budget and only 3 weeks filming per episode. When things are looking particularly bad there is usually something to pull out of the hat”, says series director and DoP, Richard Kirby.
A world renowned cameraman, but also a keen biologist Kirby has a deep understanding of his subject. He is always keen to highlight the plight of an endangered species and to raise urgent environmental problems.
“Because so many Amazon animals occupy such tiny niches, it makes them very susceptible to changes to the habitat like deforestation. Some animals are so specialized that they only live in a few square kilometers of apparently amorphous rain forest. But once that little patch has been cut down, the species has nowhere to go except extinction. There are some very moving and poignant moments in the film”, says series director and DoP Richard Kirby of his “Wildest Latin America” experience.
The “Wildest Latin America” series broadcast for the next 5 weeks (Mondays, Tuesdays and Saturdays) on Animal Planet starting with ‘Amazon’ at 8pm 7th July 2012.
