Dell SecureWorks wants the public to be informed of what viruses are actively stealing personal information and about preventative measures from being a victim. Malware or malicious software is prevalent throughout the web and can cause damage to not only PCs but also laptops, network servers and gaming systems. On April 2011, Sony Playstation encountered a massive breach of their gaming network infecting over 77 million user accounts.
A botnet is a network of infected computers used by criminals to generate profits, steal money, generate spam, launch attacks and accomplish other objectives. If your computer is infected by malware and becomes a botnet, it can be described as a “zombie computer”, which can be controlled by the host or “botnet herder” of the attack. Most of the time, the computer owner has no idea that his device has been compromised.
Botnets send out spam email, harvest email addresses from owners’ directories, store digital signatures, and steal electronic funds from Bitcoin wallets, among other activities. Malware is now being distributed through social networking sites such as Facebook, through bogus links via the user’s network list. Recently, Dell SecureWorks successfully assisted in the takedown of a malicious attack by a Waledac Kelihos botnet variant which had a similar coding structure to the Storm Worm DDoS attack malware.
A stat from Daily Botnet Statistics shows that the amount of recipients receiving spam is on the rise every day. The amount of spam being blocked is on the rise as well. China is at the top of the suspected botnet IP address list and the United States is in fourth place.
Dell SecureWorks states that anti-virus software, firewalls and NIPS (network-based intrusion detection and prevention system) are the best choices for botnet detection against early-stages of attacks. To add another level of security Dell SecureWorks states that HIPS (host-based intrusion prevention system) should be used to prevent attacks that other protection layers did not recognize, did not notice, or were not in a place to discontinue activity.
