Westby is an award-winning filmmaker who has established himself as a smart and original storyteller with a twisted sense of humor.
Westby’s 2006 feature "Film Geek" about an obsessively passionate video store clerk, was distributed by First Run Features and called “perceptively hilarious” by Entertainment Weekly. His next film,"The Auteur" premiered at the 2008 Tribeca Film Festival and has gained a worldwide cult following.
In 2011, Westby directed, edited and wrote "Rid of Me" which premiered at the Tribeca Film Festival, with the New York Times calling it "an ingenious black comedy." The film won Best Narrative Feature at Michael Moore’s Traverse City Film Festival and was acquired by Phase 4 Films; it will premiere on Showtime in July 2012.
"James has a unique and comedic vision and his stories always surprise you. He is a master of the quirky performance fused with wry wit and he has the ability to take outrageous material and humanize it,” says Mmmmm Society Founder/EP Michele Carnes Ellis. “James is the perfect compliment to our roster which brings a diverse selection of top Northwest talents to the market,” she adds.
“Mmmmm Society is gearing up to be a major production outfit,” says Westby,“and I am thrilled to be a part of it and to work with Michele. Also, the name is really fun to say. Mmmmm...”
James Westby's commercial work includes spots for Adidas and the University of Oregon, along with music videos for Storm Large ("8 Miles Wide") and Oracle ("Wake"), among others.
