Pleroma Studios Entertainment’s president/producer, Ray Lenard Brown, today announced that “83 Days: The Murder of George Stinney Jr.”, the first feature film from Pleroma Studios Entertainment, is currently in development.
“83 Days” tells the true story of George Stinney Jr., an African American teenager, who in 1944 at the age of 14 became the youngest person to be executed (by electrocution) in the United States during the 20th Century. Suspected of murdering two Caucasian girls (Betty June Binnicker, age 11 and Mary Emma Thames, age 8), Stinney was arrested, interrogated, and charged.
One month later, he was convicted and sentenced at the conclusion of a trial that only lasted (from jury selection to sentencing) one day. There was no real evidence, in fact, the only thing that the prosecution had to support their case was a confession that they claimed George made; but there was no written confession, no evidence presented to the jury, and no transcript of the trial ever filed. Most believed that this was a glorified lynching to cover for the person that actually committed the crime, a person related to a member of the coroner’s inquest jury.
Acclaimed Director, Charles Burnett, (Selma Lord Selma, Killer of Sheep) has signed on to direct the film. Mr. Burnett is also co-writing and co-producing the project.
Pleroma President and Producer, Ray L. Brown, is nurturing the project. He has enlisted the services of noted Historian/Activist, George Frierson, and Bishop Charles Stinney (George Stinney Jr’s younger brother).
Though there are actors that are being considered for various roles in the film, none have been confirmed.
