Safe City concept is gaining popularity on a global scale due to technology developments that allow advanced integration of various systems to provide better situational awareness and thereby increase efficiency and safety. According to Frost & Sullivan, Tokyo, New York, Los Angeles, Chicago and London are the key cities in which adoption of latest technology solutions is of highest possibility. The future of city security will be in wireless data transfers from end-points to network and storages. Security as a service, Long-Term Evolution (LTE) adoption and Machine-to-Machine (M2M) communication are the main factors for the development of Safe City projects.

Frost & Sullivan (defence.frost.com) analysed the Top 100 cities globally with regard to six key factors: economic power, technology adoption, security threat, city and security maturity, urbanisation and privacy. The study entitled ‘Global Safe Cities Market Assessment’ explains which technologies are currently being implemented in cities and forecasts what solutions are to be employed in the next market stage.

"Currently cities are dealing with issues of many disparate systems which do not yield as much efficiency. New technologies must be introduced and connected to increase citizens’ safety and to provide effective intelligence and situational awareness," says Frost & Sullivan's Research Analyst, Krzysztof Rutkowski. "With the population of cities continuously growing, security and safety threats are the main factors influencing the level of technological procurement. There is also increasing pressure on local authorities to ensure citizens' protection."

The technology life cycle curve stipulates what technologies are currently deployed on the marketplace. According to Rutkowski the future technologies in Smart City projects are smartphones, biometrics, unmanned aerial vehicles (UAVs), city cloud solutions and 4G LTE. All these technologies will be correlated by one technology: Physical Security Information Management (PSIM) systems.

The current austerity measures impacting expenditures on city security are the main market restraint, especially in Europe. As a consequence, the market will not witness extensive technology deployment but rather an inter-linking of technology in order to maximise efficiency, due to increasing man-guarding and technology costs. Rutkowski believes, that "Safe City projects will require and drive cooperation between public and private entities."

The competitive landscape is complex and made up of a diverse range of organisations providing both the communication backbone for first responders and a vast array of different security and information technologies. The mix of applications within a city and a wide range of stakeholders from government, first responders, commercial enterprises, and citizens drive a variety of needs and opportunities. As convergence continues to gather pace due to improved communication networks and trends such as M2M, Frost & Sullivan expects to see further partnerships, acquisitions, and new technology development.

"Collaborations and strategic alliances will intensify as organisations recognise their relative strengths and plug weaknesses by forming strategic partnerships with providers who can help them deliver a full service solution,"summarises Krzysztof Rutkowski.

The Global Safe Cities Market Assessment includes a Safe City Index, Safe City Technologies, Safe City Suppliers and Competitive Environment.
