The Society of Composers & Lyricists (SCL), the premier educational, advocacy and networking organization for professional music creators for visual media, has announced a major membership drive for New York tri-state area composers, lyricists, songwriters and other professionals; this includes a special membership offer for new members until June 30th.
The SCL members include many of the film, TV, video game and musical theater's leading composers and lyricists, including John Williams, Alan Menken, Carter Burwell, Richard Sherman, Howard Shore, Maury Yeston, and Mark Shaiman.
"The SCL in NY is the place where working professionals can network and socialize, and where young composers can learn all the things they don't teach in music school," says Joel Beckerman, a member of the New York Steering Committee and SCL Board member. "The SCL has produced amazing programs and events, and we invite music professionals in New York to participate." SCL President Dan Foliart explained, "There has never in history been more cross-over from film & TV to Broadway and vice-versa. The SCL recognizes and supports these composers in all visual arts through seminars, receptions and screenings."
The Special NY-Only Introductory Membership fee of $70 represents a special introduction to the SCL in NY providing new members free access to all SCL in NY seminars. Recent seminars have included a panel on Production Music co-hosted by ASCAP, and a Songwriting for Film and TV Showcase at the Living Room co-hosted by BMI. Future SCL in NY seminars include a panel discussion on revenues and royalties for composers and songwriters entitled "Where's My Money?" and an expert demonstration of new software for recording and editing music.
