This month sees the start of the first ever Bush Schools course to run in Australia. Archimedes Training are the largest provider of Forest Schools and Beach Schools training courses in the world and already run training courses in numerous countries as diverse as Canada, America, Norway, Dubai, Hungary and New Zealand. Archimedes were invited to Australia by the British Embassy and UK Trade and Investment due to lots of international interest in their courses and a bid to increase trade between the two countries. The Forest Schools model has been rebranded as ‘Bush Schools’ to take to Australia and the pilot course begins there on the 16th April.
The course coordinator Paul Moseley is very enthusiastic; “To have access to nature as you do in Australia is a marvellous opportunity, one which I hope to help develop and look at in new and fantastic ways.” Paul has over 12 years of experience in showing others how to enjoy and use nature to its full potential. He has attained a level where he can live from the land with nothing but a knife, during a British winter. He also has a wealth of experience relating to introducing children to the outdoors, from educational school visits, to long term Forest School programmes and working with challenging behaviour.
Paul is very confident that this new venture can succeed and bring many benefits to Australian children; “The land in Great Britain is a part of us, it shapes us as much as we shape it. I hope to bring what we have learned as a country, work with local practitioners and work to adapt it to suit Australia and build something truly unique and beneficial for all children and young people. The simple tracking of an animal holds a great many opportunities for children. Along with play, games and other bush skills such as fire lighting, shelter building and wood craft, we can offer children a rich, diverse opportunity to grow, as well as to nurture a connection to the land and its animals.”
