ABB, the leading power and automation technology group, has won an order worth approximately $15 million from leading European utility, Statnett to supply and install substation automation systems to support a new power line being installed between Ørskog and Fardal on the west coast of Norway. The new line is being constructed to strengthen the grid in a region where industrial growth is driving the demand for reliable power. The order was booked in the first quarter.
“Our advanced substation automation systems will help monitor, control and protect the power network thereby improving efficiency and enhance grid reliability”, said Jens Birgersson, head of ABB’s Network Management business within the company’s Power Systems division. “They will also help maximize power availability and optimize maintenance costs”.
The order includes supply of the protection and control systems for seven substations along the line. ABB will install a MicroSCADA Pro system and IEDs (intelligent electronic devices) from ABB’s Relion family of protection and control devices for each of the substations.
These systems will provide information on network conditions to the control system in the substation, and also feed data into the control system of Statnett's regional and national power grid.
The substation automation systems comply with the international IEC61850 standard, which, among other benefits, ensures interoperability between devices from different manufacturers. The installations are expected to be commissioned between 2013 and 2015.
ABB (abb.com) is a leader in power and automation technologies that enable utility and industry customers to improve performance while lowering environmental impact. The ABB Group of companies operates in around 100 countries and employs about 135,000 people.
