EDAP TMS SA (NASDAQ: EDAP), a global leader in therapeutic ultrasound, announced today that it will partner with Diagnostic Center for Disease, a division of PanAm HIFU, to offer minimally invasive High-Intensity Focused Ultrasound (HIFU) treatment to North American prostate cancer patients, with the installation of an Ablatherm device in Cancun, Mexico. Diagnostic Center for Disease is a urology practice under the medical direction of Dr. Ronald Wheeler in Sarasota, Florida, that provides prostate cancer patients access to Ablatherm-HIFU treatment in London and Cancun.

Ablatherm-HIFU is a procedure where the temperature inside the prostate is raised to 85 degrees Celsius using a focused ultrasound beam to destroy targeted cells. Ablatherm-HIFU technology was approved for treatment in Europe in 1999, and has been shown to have a similar success rate to radical prostatectomy but with the major advantage of using minimally invasive technology with fewer side effects.

Marc Oczachowski, Chief Executive Officer of EDAP TMS, said,“We have received many requests from urologists in the United States to be trained on and have access to Ablatherm-HIFU at offshore locations. We are pleased to announce this partnership agreement with PanAm HIFU and look forward to working with Dr. Wheeler’s medical team, which has experience in treating prostate cancer with Ablatherm-HIFU technology in the United Kingdom. Our new partnership will give PanAm HIFU access to our Ablatherm-HIFU technology in Cancun, Mexico, to treat their prostate cancer patients starting in April 2012.”

Dr. Ronald Wheeler, M.D., Urologist and Medical Director of Diagnostic Center for Disease and PanAm HIFU, said,“We are delighted to offer this beautiful venue to our patients and to the patients of other U.S. physicians who may want to be trained on this exciting robotic Ablatherm technology. Several of our patients have reported positive outcomes after receiving focal prostate cancer treatment with EDAP’s Ablatherm-HIFU device. Cancun offers spectacular ‘medical tourism’ as well as five-star hospital facilities.”
