Nokia today announced that its Location & Commerce unit’s Enterprise reseller, WebMaps, is providing NAVTEQ® Maps for ANERPV’s new real-time vehicle tracking system.

With this advanced technology solution, the NAVTEQ Map is used to provide geographical coordinates and enable satellite positioning of vehicles reported as stolen. The most important feature of the Webmaps solution is that it creates a single connection between all companies dedicated to vehicle tracking and protection for Mexico’s Department of Public Security (SSP).

The system has been implemented in the advanced C4 control center of the SSP. This allows authorities to react immediately and find the exact location of the vehicle reported as stolen on a screen in real time. This report can be viewed by the squad car, the control center, the vehicle tracking and protection companies and the association. As soon as the vehicle is found its status will change from “stolen” to “recovered”.

The ANERPV GPS system provides authorities with information about the stolen cars such as the brand, model, license plate, color, and unique features. It also provides the precise location of the vehicle on digital georeferenced maps along with information on properties, stores and other points of interest near the vehicle’s location, all based on the NAVTEQ Map.

“The program, which has taken two years to perfect, is welcomed by both authorities and local citizens, and we hope to expand its use throughout Mexico,” says Yolanda Bernal Sánchez, president of ANERPV.

This system is part of an initiative started ten years ago by ANERPV, which groups all vehicle geolocation companies into a single institution and seeks to reduce crime against transport companies and car owners.

Users and companies interested in this additional protection for their vehicles can do so for approximately 4,000 pesos (for personal vehicles and trucks); the equipment installation and monthly rental fee will be around 200 pesos. The precision of the vehicle location is five meters and the vehicle’s location can be determined in average 1.5 seconds.

“When developing the ANERPV system, we needed world-class technology that would also provide superior content for the systems used by the companies which make up the association. This is why we chose NAVTEQ Maps,” explains Cesar Islas, general director at WebMaps.

The technology provided by ANERPV will allow all vehicles equipped with a global positioning system (GPS) to be located. However, the system goes one step further by measuring police response time and procedures.

“We know that safety is currently a critical issue in Mexico. We recognize the importance in providing high-quality accurate data for WebMaps and ANERPV to use in this system, which seeks to significantly reduce car robberies in collaboration with the SSP,” says Javier Nuñez, director of the Enterprise Division, Nokia, Location & Commerce.
