• GE’s Onsite Transformer Rewind Service Offers Alternative to Costly Shipping to Repair Centers;
• Service Provides Fully Portable IEEE Testing Including Induced, Impulse and Load Loss.
When large transformers become damaged and need to be repaired, utility companies are left with very few options. GE Energy’s (NYSE: GE) Industrial Solutions business now offers Onsite Transformer Rewind services which can provide extra high voltage rewinds up to 1000 MVA and 500 kV, as well as the capability to perform internal repairs in the field.
GE Energy continues to develop lifecycle services providing customers with best-in-class service solutions. Repair facilities once capable of housing these immense transformers are no longer available in North America. GE’s Onsite Transformer Rewind service offers an alternative to replacing old transformers with new ones or shipping out the massive transformers and risking further damage and excessive costs. GE can rewind, or remanufacture, a failed transformer directly at the customers’ site.
Industrial Solutions’ on-site rewind service provides a team of dedicated technicians with transformer expertise directly to the site of the rewind or repair. Once on-site, technicians construct a temporary facility equipped with double-insulated fabric walls and an interlocking composite floor designed to withstand the weight of even the largest transformer. After the building is installed over the floor, it is pressurized through three HVAC units allowing for proper temperature and humidity control regardless of the ambient conditions.
At times, repairs can be completed in the field in less time and for less money than the typical transportation costs alone. Examples of these repairs include tank shield repairs, catastrophic bushing failure with heavy contamination, de-energized tap changer failure and oil box repair.
“Shipping large damaged transformers to repair facilities around the globe can be difficult and costly, often taking up to three months to complete the process and generating transportation costs that can easily exceed $1 million each way,” said John Engstrom, transformer services product leader for GE Energy’s Industrial Solutions business. “Bringing GE’s repair facility to the site of a damaged transformer can mean lower costs and much faster turnaround for our customers. GE is able to maintain the precision and quality of an off-site repair facility without the cost and time commitment when shipping a huge piece of equipment across country or even overseas.”
When the structure has been completed, GE’s technicians remove the core and coil assembly from the damaged transformer with a gantry crane and disassemble it, storing the core laminations on specially designed fixtures during the rewind. Transformers are then redesigned to take advantage of the latest materials and design advantages. If new coils are necessary, they are manufactured at one of GE’s winding centers and carefully shipped to the rewind site.
In addition to the Onsite Transformer Rewind Service, GE also can provide fully portable IEEE testing including induced, impulse and load loss as part of the on-site rewind or on a stand-alone basis. GE also assigns a project manager with direct transformer technical expertise to each project to provide daily updates, detailed work planning and regular status on planned vs. actual.
