Twenty years ago, two Denver renegades were somewhat fed up with typical advertising agency culture. Beth Wampler and Oscar De Cardenas realized they shared a common vision of what an advertising agency should be … and, more importantly what it should not. And, as it tends to with most imaginative people, from this angst sprung a new creative venture: AOR, Inc. was born.
AOR – Agency Off Record – began in 1992 as a mutant hybrid between advertising agency, design house and delivery room, and has since expanded into a project-based integrated marketing and advertising firm offering interactive design, public relations, social media management and more. Where other agencies have folded in tough economic times, AOR continues to grow, boasting an impressive client list that includes Hearst Media Services, Houston Chronicle, Avnet Technology Solutions, Larimer Square, Denver Film Society and many others.
Remaining faithful to the founder’s values and philosophies has enabled the agency to continue to thrive, explained current owner Derek Newcom.
"Beth and Oscar started this agency with core values that include not only providing superior customer service, and innovative and effective work, but also the attitude that work should be fun,” explained Newcom. “Where many places talk the talk about ‘working hard and playing just as hard’, we truly embody that spirit, daily. This is most apparent in our world-class creative work that is effective, strategic, yet also keeps a fun and youthful attitude. I feel this has truly been the key to our longevity.”
In tandem with this celebratory anniversary, Matthew Keeney has been promoted from director of account services to president. Keeney, who started with the agency as an account executive in 1997, has big plans.
“I’m thrilled to lead our amazing staff into the next 20 years of amazing work,” said Keeney. “It hasn’t always been easy, but when other agencies have gone under, we’ve kept afloat mostly through sound fiscal management and our ability to deliver what our clients want and need, on time.”
Also being promoted are Elena Mlotkowski, from account coordinator to account executive, and Sarah Fox from operations manager to director of business operations.
AOR, originally located in the Bradford Publishing Building at 17th and Wazee, moved to its current digs on South Broadway in 2000. Since its’ founding in 1992, the agency has grown to a team of nine full-time staff, three regular collaborative partners and more than $8 million in capitalized billings.
AOR Inc. (thinkaor.com) is an advertising, marketing, and interactive agency hybrid with expertise in integrated B-to-B campaigns encompassing traditional and digital tactics that drive results. AOR Inc. specializes in the high-tech industry, and new product and company launches. AOR stands for “Agency Off Record,” reflecting the agency’s nimble approach to problem solving in a changing B-to-B landscape. AOR Inc. is located at 1345 South Broadway and online.
