Having revolutionised the handmade magazine market, Mollie Makes already has over 50% of the market share[2] as its first anniversary in May draws close. It’s a craft magazine with a difference and has tapped into a strong and growing trend for contemporary handmade craft, appealing to a younger generation of crafters, with many of its readers under 35.
Mollie Makes enjoyed great success at launch, when the title broke Future’s new subscription record and has continued as it began – print subscriptions are on track to break the 10,000 mark in just ten months.
Social media has played a key part in the magazine’s success as subscriptions have been largely driven through online channels. As part of the launch strategy a Community Editor was employed to engage with the crafting community online through a Mollie Makes blog, Facebook, Twitter and YouTube channel. Now Mollie Makes has over 25,000 Facebook fans and almost 10,000 Twitter followers engaging with the brand regularly.
Jane Toft, Editor of Mollie Makes, says: “Around two fifths of British women now have a craft-based hobby[3] and Mollie Makes has really tapped into the current trend for contemporary, modern craft. Mollie Makes sets itself apart from the typical craft magazine both editorially and visually, as it curates content from online blogs and websites into a print magazine, which makes it a highly collectible source of inspiration. This has clearly gone down well with our readers and we’ve harnessed the power of the internet to engage with new readers every day.”
Kerry Lawrence, Publisher of Mollie Makes, added: “With over 20 years experience in the craft sector, Future is adept at spotting new trends and publishing new products where it sees a gap in the market. Mollie Makes is an excellent example of this and the success of the magazine speaks for itself. Before launching the magazine we worked hard to engage with the online craft communities and to harness the power of social media which put the launch in a very strong position from the outset.”
Mollie Makes launched in May 2011 and has proved to be a phenomenal success, ranking as the top-selling craft magazine in WHSmith stores[4]. The print edition is available to buy in good retailers and digital editions are available on Apple Newsstand and on Zinio. Readers can subscribe online via MyFavouriteMagazines.co.uk/.
