Susan Dworkin Levering, an activist, feminist and global citizen who helped change the world for the better, passed away on October 13, 2010 after a life of political activism. To honor the memory of his late wife, Associate Provost for Academic Affairs Dr. Les Baltimore created the Sue Levering Social Justice Award for Levermore Global Scholars (LGS) who are active and informed global citizens. The first award recipients are Adelphi University students with a passion for social change and service: Janae Cummings ’13 and Ammie Lin ’14.

Ms. Levering organized demonstrations and civil disobedience projects to oppose the war in Vietnam, supported the anti-apartheid and anti-colonial movements in South Africa and Zimbabwe respectively, and had a law practice on Long Island. She generously devoted her time to her clients while fighting against racial discrimination and for better services for the disabled in her school district. Sue Levering’s life exemplified the idea of the committed citizen. Her legacy will be those who continue the work to make the world a more just, humane, and peaceful place that defined her life and this can already be seen in the two recipients of this scholarship.

Janae Cummings, from Harlem, majors in international studies, concentrating in political science and Spanish, and is also fulfilling a minor in sociology. Ms. Cummings has organized multiple service-learning trips to Our School at Blair Grocery in New Orleans and is one of the founding mothers of the national non-profit student-led organization The Youth Coalition for Community Action. Not only has she provided opportunities for other Adelphi students to learn about urban farming through student-generated workshops on transformative learning and sustainability, she also collaborated with LGS faculty and administrators to create a course focusing on environmental justice. Janae Cummings also serves as the Public Affairs Officer on the LGS Student Leadership Council. In 2011, she won the National Newman Civic Fellows Award for her efforts in New Orleans and was selected to participate in the Sadie Nash Leadership Project as an ELLA (Engage, Learn, Lead, and Act) Fellow.

Ammie Lin, a sophomore majoring in communications and pursuing a career in anti-human, animal, and resource exploitation, hails from Brooklyn. Ms. Lin has spent numerous hours fundraising to promote fair trade in the garment industry, raising awareness about ending gendered violence, and has become a long-term mentor at Hempstead High School. Last year, through the Freshman Community Action Program (FCAP), Ammie Lin participated in various community service projects such as, cleaning up Jones Beach, re-painting rusted school fences, visiting a nursing home, and gardening at a local bird sanctuary. As a member of the LGS Student Leadership Council, she also helped plan Operation Unity 2011, an annual day-long event where LGS students lead and participate in workshops about social and global justice issues.

LGS develops active and informed global citizens who are compassionate about other people, educated in global and local issues, knowledgeable about other societies and nations, and skilled in advocating for change. Scholars attend seminars, participate in conferences and workshops at the United Nations, and attend events with international leaders and policy makers amongst other activities.
