John R. Bailey, managing partner of the law firm Bailey Kennedy, and his law partner Dennis L. Kennedy have been selected to speak about legal ethics during the American Bar Association’s 2012 Spring Meeting, being held at Caesars Palace March 22-24.
Titled “Sinners in Sin City: Ethical Issues and Dilemmas in Client and Practice Development,” the panel discussion will include Bailey, Kennedy, William S. Boyd School of Law Professor Jeffrey Stempel and legal marketing specialist Sarah Thornton.
“This discussion couldn’t come at a better time, with new marketing avenues becoming available every day,” said Bailey. “This discussion will help attorneys understand that with every marketing effort they undertake, possible ethical dilemmas may arise. We’ll discuss dozens of popular marketing and client development avenues as well as the ethical implications they may bring.”
“Sinners in Sin City” is being offered to participants of the American Bar Association’s Spring Meeting for its Business Law Section at 8 am. on March 22.
Among the topics of discussion are social media, reputation building vehicles, traditional marketing opportunities and ethical dilemmas that may arise from them. “Attorneys advertise their services and market themselves in many different ways,” said Kennedy. “In some areas of law, the competition is incredible and name recognition goes a long way in building a practice. But ethical consideration is critical when undertaking any marketing program. “We will look at many common mistakes attorneys make in this area.”
Bailey and Kennedy are among the most respected corporate litigation attorneys in the state. Bailey formed the firm in 2001 after 16 years with Nevada’s largest law firm and it has grown steadily since then. He is the vice-chairman and member of the Nevada State Bar Association’s Moral Character and Fitness Committee as well as a respected member of the Southern Nevada community.
A Las Vegas native, Bailey serves as chairman of the governing board at the Andre Agassi College Preparatory Academy and a director of Nevada’s Public Education Foundation. He is also a member of the Council for a Better Nevada and director at Shuffle Master, Inc. as well as a two-time former Chairman and Commissioner on the Nevada Athletic Commission.

Kennedy’s legal practice emphasizes legal ethics in addition to complex commercial litigation, class-action lawsuits, hospital and healthcare law and anti-trust law. He is a former adjunct professor at the William S. Boyd School of Law and co-editor of the Nevada Civil Practice Manual.
Kennedy is an author and frequent speaker in the areas of litigation and legal ethics. He is listed in “Best Lawyers in America” for commercial litigation and ‘bet-the-company’ cases. He has also been listed by Chambers USA as one of the top five commercial litigators in Nevada for each of the past six years.
Stempel, a professor at the William S. Boyd School of Law, is a graduate of Yale Law School, where he was an editor of the Yale Law Journal and co-founder of the Yale Law and Policy Review. He spent two years as a law clerk to a federal district court judge in Philadelphia and three years in private practice with a firm in Minneapolis before entering the teaching profession. He teaches Civil Procedure/Alternative Dispute Resolution, Evidence, Professional Responsibility, and Insurance Law.
Thornton owns a public relations and marketing firm, and has worked with attorneys and law firms for most of her 16-year career in the industry. Her practice is focused on professional service companies, healthcare companies and the real estate industry.
