The growing number of injectable drugs that requiring dosing based on metabolic readings or patient-specific treatment protocols is driving the growth of injection devices that allow the patient or caregiver to set the drug dose and vary the dose over time.

Because earlier generations of specialty drug injectors were initially introduced for the administration of insulin by diabetics, it is not surprising that variable dose pens are quite common. These pens allow the patient to dial in the dosage required based on glucose meter or monitor readings or nutritional circumstances. The current generation of insulin pen injectors also features digital readouts and dose memory for therapeutic tracking purposes.

The current generation of variable dose drug injection devices is being marketed for a growing number of therapeutic drug segments. In addition to insulin therapy, these segments include hormone replacement, hematopoietics, antivirals, and neurology and reproductive medicine. Devices for delivering small doses of drugs in fine increments have also entered the market. The addition of dose management tools such as dose memory and prior dose recall are aiding patients with self-administer by enabling them to make better and safer dosing decisions.

Detailed analysis of variable dosing injection devices, therapeutic sectors, and participants are included in a comprehensive report. The report documents and analyzes the results of a recent survey of injectable device safety for drug delivery conducted by Greystone Research Associates.
