When Zach of Marley’s Mutts Dog Rescue heard about puppies suffering from the February 12th blaze in California City, he stepped in right away. Working with local resources, he learned that Hyperbaric Oxygen therapy was their best chance for survival and his search led him to Pet Emergency and Specialty Hospital in Thousand Oaks. Since arriving the evening of February 13th, the puppies have been under the care of Dr. Bonnie Werner, a specialist in Small Animal Internal Medicine, Dr. Cheryl Braswell, residency-trained in Emergency and Critical Care and the entire team of Emergency Doctors and Veterinary Technicians. Puppies immediately received advanced medical procedures for severe burns including pain management, specialized wound care, infection treatment, and hyperbaric oxygen therapy.

“The cooperation and compassion that we have experienced with Pet Emergency and Specialty Hospital has made all the difference” says Zach Skow, Executive Director/Founder of Marley’s Mutts Dog Rescue. “We have been linked at the heart throughout this process and they have kept us apprised via email, text, and phone to ensure that we are always up-to-speed. Honestly, they feel like family, and the best decision I have made in my rescue career was to take those pups down to Thousand Oaks!”

The puppies were suffering from 3rd degree burns, also known as full thickness burns, a very severe type of burn. To ensure the highest standard of care, Dr. Werner called the acclaimed Grossman Burn Center for further treatment recommendations. She was impressed when she received a call from the internationally renowned Dr. Richard Grossman himself. Not only did he provide further advice, but offered to come to the clinic to see the puppies personally.

“When I heard the story of these puppies” recounts Dr. Grossman, a pioneer in human burn treatments,“I just knew I had to pack my medical bag and make my way to them.”

Since then, Dr. Grossman and the Pet Emergency and Specialty Team have collaborated extensively. Dr. Grossman has taught the Senior Veterinary Technicians advanced debriding and burn treatment techniques which are completed daily on each puppy.

As Dr. Werner states,“We’re so pleased to collaborate directly with Dr. Grossman to provide care to these two puppies. It’s a rare opportunity to treat burns of this severity and to have the guidance and support of a world-class expert like Dr. Grossman.”

In addition, since the burns are so severe, Dr. Grossman has offered to perform skin grafts on each of the puppies, currently scheduled for February 17th. This is a specialized procedure which implants skin onto the affected areas to dramatically increase the survivability of the patient and improve the overall healing process.

From near-death, to a professional fast-acting rescue team, to a leading emergency veterinary center and a world-renowned burn expert, and now entirely sponsored by these medical providers, these little puppies have certainly found themselves in the best possible hands for the best possible chance at surviving and thriving.

About Marley’s Mutts
Marley's Mutts Dog Rescue is a registered 501©(3) (Marleysmutts.com), non-profit organization that rescues abandoned, injured, abused and otherwise down-on-their-luck animals. Our primary focus is rescuing dogs from Kern County shelters that are at great risk of being euthanized. However, our scope is by no means limited to shelter dogs only. We help dogs that are desperately in need—dogs whose futures are in the balance.

Our dogs come from every predicament imaginable: soldier-parent was killed, owner died of old age, severely injured dogs (burned, hit by car, etc.), strays, animals seized in abuse cases, deploying soldiers’ dogs who can't be cared for, and the list goes on. Our rescue is located in "fire country" so we have rehabilitated and adopted a few dogs with serious burns, but nothing like these girls.
